It was fairly fast paced, and new clues turned up in each chapter, building up to a nice reveal at the end…. I liked the general plot, the mystery, and I was desperate to find out where Cat’s dad fit into it all. I have serious mixed feelings about this book. However… from about 60% it began to go downhill for me. Trying to understand how Maryanne became Alice, how Cat’s father links to it all was definitely intriguing! It was interesting, and I enjoyed the details of the case too. She has a muddled relationship with her family, in particular her father, which is suddenly brought to the spotlight with her current case. She’s fierce, proving herself to be a good detective.

I flew through the first half, and I liked Cat’s fiery character. The beginning part went very well for me. This was the first book we read together, and we were both very excited for it! I wouldn’t have chosen to read this book myself, but my best friend and I have decided to start reading books together! Over a month, we will read a book and then discuss our thoughts. Did her father do something to the teenage girl all those years ago? Could he have harmed Alice now? And how can you trust a liar even if he might be telling the truth? Though she was only a child, Cat knew that her charming but dissolute father wasn’t telling the truth when he denied knowing anything about Maryanne or her disappearance. The call raises uneasy memories for Cat–her family met Maryanne while on holiday, right before she vanished. When she’s called to the scene of a murder in Islington, not far from the pub her estranged father still runs, she discovers that Alice Lapaine, a young housewife who didn’t get out much, has been found strangled.Ĭat and her team immediately suspect Alice’s husband, until she receives a mysterious phone call that links the victim to Maryanne Doyle, a teenage girl who went missing in Ireland eighteen years earlier. Twenty-six-year-old Cat Kinsella overcame a troubled childhood to become a Detective Constable with the Metropolitan Police Force, but she’s never been able to banish these ghosts. In this gripping debut procedural, a young London policewoman must probe dark secrets buried deep in her own family’s past to solve a murder and a long-ago disappearance.
